The photographer

My name is Terry Williams and I am a Sudbury-based photographer and visual artist. My practice is rooted in lens-based media, with which I attempt to create intimate, personal encounters with large-scale social, cultural & historical themes and issues. The work presented on this blog dates from 2014 when I lived in the Junction neighbourgood of Toronto. At that time I had recently become interested in Social Practice which strongly influenced my approach to this project. This project was completed as part of the culminating body of work for my BFA from Ryerson University.

My first formal photography studies were with Susan McEachern at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1994. After this I continued to shoot while working as a producer and manager in contemporary theatre and music for over a decade. I had the good fortune to be involved in many fascinating projects with international creators such as Philip Glass, R. Murray Schafer, Jeanne Lamon and Christos Hatzis.

My work has been exhibited in numerous group exhibitions including the 2007 Grand Design Festival in Toronto, and is held by the City of Toronto Archives and in private collections in Canada, the US and the UK. In 2011 I was recognized as a National Winner in Documentary Photography by the Canadian Association of Professional Image Creators’ Rodeo competition. In 2009 I went back to university full-time at Ryerson University’s School of Image Arts to finish what I started in 1994 and to bring my experiences in the intervening years to bear on photography and contemporary art.
